STUDY ON THE PATTERNS OF INSOMNIA OF PSYCHIATRIC OUTPATIENTS

Abstract
The author conducted a study of 98 insomnia patients, including 23males and 75 females, who were treated in the Depart. of Neuropsychiatry of Korea University Medical School Hospital during the period from the beginning of Jan. until the end of Aug. 1976 to elucidate the relationship between t1:e patterns of insomnia and multiple clinical aspects of these patients.
The summery of the results were as follows:
1. The main patterns of insomnia in both sexes were DFA (Difficulty in Falling Asleep) type and BS (Broken Sleep) type in general.
2. In those patients of 5th decade of life EMA (Early Morning Awakening) type was major insomnia pattern and DFA type in 4th decade of life.
3. The patients who complained of DFA type anp CF (Combination type of DFA and EMA) type usually went to bed late and those of EMA type earlier at night.
4. The sleep onset latency of EMA type was short but those of DFA type, CT type, BS type, and TI (Total Insomnia) type were longer.
5. As to the frequency of awakening during sleep, those of DFA type, BS type and TI type showed much frequent awakening episodes, but those of EMA type awakened rarely.
6. All patients were easily awakened by trivial environmental stimuli except those of EMA type and CT type- who kept going asleep even with some enviromental stimulation.
7. Anxious or unpleasurable dreams were reproted much more frequently in those of DFA type, BS type, and TI type than in those of EMA type.
8. Unpleasurable feelings on awakening were reported in the majority of those insomnia patterns while a quarter of EMA type and CT type reported refreshed feeling.
9. Intrapsychic tensions were more important factors inducing insomnia in DFA type and BS type and environmental stresses in EMA type and CT type.
10. Many of the insomnia patients sought sleeping pills as the method overcoming their insomnia.
11. Sleep disturbances in anxiety neurosis and schizophrenia showed DFA type while many involutional depressive patients were suffered form EMA type of insomnia.
12. As to their personality patterns many of them showed obsessive-compulsive (28.6%) and hysterical personality (25.5%)
